No commission if your clients renew their insurance policies directly

IRDAI has found that insurance companies have paid commission to their agents and brokers even when they receive new and renewal business directly.
    Nishant Patnaik Jan 30, 2019

Next time when you ask your clients to renew their insurance policy directly through insurance companies, you will not get any commission.

In a recent circular, IRDAI has asked insurance companies not to remunerate agents and brokers on insurance policies directly received from customers. IRDAI has found that insurance companies have paid commission to their agents and brokers even when they receive new and renewal business directly.

Sujay Banarji, Member (Distributor), IRDAI said, “It has come to the notice that insurers are paying remuneration to insurance intermediaries for new and renewal insurance business received by them directly. Therefore, the authority advises the insurers not to book new/renew the business directly received from customer/insured in the name of the insurance intermediaries and shall refrain from remunerating them for such direct new/renewal business. Further, no insurance intermediaries shall receive remuneration from insurers on insurance business directly received by the insurer from the customer/insured.”

IRDAI data shows that direct sales channel in which life insurance companies sell insurance policies on their own through online channel has not taken off well largely due to non-differential pricing. Many companies do not offer different premiums for policies sold through direct and agency channels. They offer uniform premium across distribution channel i.e. agency channel and direct sales.

Only a few companies offer discount of up to 10% in term insurance policies if a person buys it online.

IRDAI data shows the direct sales channel had contributed 6% of new individual business premium in FY 2017-18. While LIC had sold 1.47% of its individual new business directly, private insurers sold 11% through direct sales last fiscal. However, in group business, both LIC and private players have sold majority of policies through direct sales.

It is disgusting, even if we renew the policy on behalf of claint how the confirm that this renewal premium payment with the help of agent? What about ESC mandate? Salary cutting?

This is absolute injustice to the classic Distributor m/agents in the field. With greatest difficulty and inconvenience I procure the business from my client giving comparative analysis statistics etc I then offer services free of charges for other requirements of my clients . In an era of digitization and convenience of online payment my client chooses to renew online to avoid writing out chks and making payments just aday or two before expiry. I am in touch with my client I keep reminding my client about the payments and the compzny deprives me of my legitimate and rightful earnings. Is This justice? My initial hard work goes down the drain because of improvised technology and digitisation at a convenience of mere payment facility? What about red tapisim involved when a client has inquiries and policy issues will the insurance company reach out in equal interest for having saved the commission through online renewal as compared to agent service rendered to the client in such a scenario since the agent receives payment? Who then is at the receiving end of such a disastrous change. The client will suffer tremendously as agent will wash hands off. A RIDICULOUS ATTEMPT TO STOP AGENT COMMISSION IF CLIENT CHOOSES ONLINE RENEWAL. THE CLIENT IS LEFT AT THE MARCY OF THE INSURERS.

An alternative can be considered with an online option.. through present agent..... direct.. The clarity in the choice of option will give the clients clearer picture of agent relationship

All the coments herein above show how much aggrieved we are. There is no reply to these comments. No one in the authorities is sensitive to our feelings.
If SIP and ECS mode ,or on line renewal, is taken as direct receipt of the contribution, it is nothing but highhandedness? Who motivated the insured/investor for these modes of payment - it is only the Distributor / Agent. Mutual fund or LIC did not do any thing to educate them. Now if the authorities behave against the insterest of agents and distributor, we should discourage any more such modes, and find ways and means to get the ECS and SIP stopped. We should promote subscritption of yearly Recurring Deposits, and maturity amount be paid for yearly mode, which is certainly better and ultimately cheaper. Similarly subscription to Liquid fund, and then switch periodically to respective sceme of MF.
And get rid of problem created by the authrities.

If yes, then where and how ?
