Data released by AMFI and CRISIL Intelligence shows that individual investors which include HNIs and retail investors account for 19.4% of the total passive funds AUM in 2024.
Among individual investors, HNIs have shown a stronger interest in passive funds over the last five years. HNI AUM in passive funds has grown 56 times between March 2019 and March 2024 to reach Rs. 1.26 lakh crore.
HNI share of passive fund AUM has increased from 1.6% in March 2019 to 13.8% in March 2024. Within HNI passive funds AUM, index funds account for a major share of 67.6% in March 2024. Also, HNI AUM in ETFs other than gold has increased from 2.6% to 26.8% during this period of five years.
On the other hand, the share of retail investors in passive funds AUM has declined in five years, from 22.9% in March 2019 to 5.60% in March 2024.
Corporate investors share in passive funds has increased from 74.9% to 79.8%.

Women investors have also shown growing interest in passive funds. Women’s allocation to passive funds has increased from 2.5% in March 2019 to 4.1% in March 2024. In gold ETFs and FoFs, women’s share has risen sharply from 5.2% in March 2019 to 24.9% in March 2024, nearly a fourfold increase.
Overall, in passive funds, the share of ETFs other than gold ETFs has declined from 93.3% in March 2019 to 73.1% in March 2024. Index funds have seen a healthy increase in passive AUM from 3.6% to 23.5% during this period while Gold ETFs have had a relatively minor increase of 3.1% in March 2019 to 3.4% in March 2024.
