Should you prepay your home loan or make new investments? The answer may surprise you

You have outstanding loans and also the capacity to make fresh investments. The question arises whether it is a better idea to repay your housing loan before the schedule or invest the money in an equity-oriented mutual fund for the long term.

Invest or repay? This is a question that never has an off-season. Here’s a typical example. A reader mailed me, saying that he has a housing loan on which he is paying an interest of 11% a year. There’s no problem—he is able to pay the EMI comfortably out of his income. However, he now finds that he also has some cash accumulated which he can invest.
