Coimbatore MFD U Kannan, his wife Sowmya and their five-year-old daughter Samyuktha K have been travelling from Kanyakumari to Kashmir from April 21 to spread awareness about differently abled individuals.
During this 25-day-long road trip, the family will visit multiple cities in their car to deliver knowledge sessions. Kannan told Cafemutual that he is associated with an NGO. He said, “In 2019, I visited a place with a friend where I saw many differently abled children who were left by their parents. This was when I realized that I should do something for them Hence, I have planned a road trip to spread awareness challenges faced by differently abled individuals.”
Highlighting a few challenges, Kannan said, “These individuals do not have access specific toilets at public places. Also, these individuals need to spend at least Rs.200 per day on diapers which is a costly affair for many orphans. In addition, there are many buildings which do not have lifts or ramps. People should be aware of these basic rights that differently abled individuals expect from us.”
Talking about the trip, he said that he will deliver awareness sessions for differently abled and others with the help of an NGO. “Through these sessions, we will create awareness among people about how to deal with differently abled, types of disability, how to deal with a situation when a family sees a member suffering from disability and take them through state government and central government schemes for upliftment of differently abled. We will also give training to differently abled individuals on basics of computer so that they can start earning on their own.”
While Kannan started his distribution journey in 2005 as an employee with MF distribution firm, he started on his own in 2014. Currently, he manages AUM of Rs.35 crore from over 400 clients.
