The alternative investment fund (AIF) industry has become a Rs.8.50 lakh crore industry in June 2023. SEBI data shows that the commitment raised or AUM in MF parlance of the AIF industry has grown by 22% from Rs.6.94 lakh crore in June 2022 to Rs.8.44 lakh crore in June 2023.
Of the total AIF AUM, Cat II AIFs has seen highest growth of 24% in its AUM. Mumbai MFD Vinod Jain of Jain Privy Client said that many HNIs are interested in private debt funds and credit opportunities funds as these funds offer higher yields.
Real estate funds, private equity and debt funds and funds for distressed assets are some of the funds in Cat II AIFs.
Cat III AIFs which include long short funds and long only funds have witnessed growth of 14% over the last one year in terms of commitment raised. Deepak Jaggi of Satco Wealth believes that a lot of HNIs in this category have moved to PMSs. He said a few portfolio managers offer similar funds with comparatively lower ticket size.
Cat I AIFs which invest in startups through venture capital funds and run strategies like infrastructure funds and SME funds have recorded growth of 10% in one year in its commitment.
