    SEBI data shows that AIFs have raised commitments (equivalent to AUM) of Rs. 13.05 lakh crore as on December 2024, recording an increase of 5% from Rs. 12.43 lakh crore as on September 2024. 

    Further, AIFs made investments of Rs. 5 lakh crore as on December 2024. The AIF industry has made investments of Rs. 5.06 lakh crore, recording an increase of 13% from Rs. 4.49 lakh crore in September 2024. 

    Let us look at the key trends:

    Cat I AIFs

    • The category has seen a 1.6% increase in commitments raised from Rs. 83,500 crore as on September 2024 to Rs. 84,900 crore as on December 2024
    • AIF Cat I accounts for Rs. 40,600 crore i.e. 8% of the total AIF investments made, increasing 4% from Rs. 39,100 crore as on September 2024 
    • Funds raised in the category have increased by over 2% from Rs. 45,800 crore to Rs. 46,800 crore as on December 2024 
    • Venture capital funds constitute the highest chunk of the Cat I pie with investments of Rs. 26,200 crore and commitments of Rs. 50,800 crore
    • Infrastructure funds are next with their total investments reaching Rs. 7,500 crore as on December 2024 while total commitments stand at Rs. 20,000 crore
    • Angel funds have also recorded total investments of Rs. 4,100 crore with total commitments reaching Rs. 8,700 crore 
    • Overall, Cat I AIFs have seen investments of Rs. 32,700 crore in equity or equity linked securities and about Rs. 1,100 crore in debt securities with Rs. 400 crore also invested in REITs and InvITs

    Cat II AIFs

    • The commitments raised in the category have crossed the mark of Rs. 10 lakh crore as on December 2024, recording an increase of 3% from Rs. 9.76 lakh crore in September 2024
    • Investments in Cat II AIFs are at Rs. 3.20 lakh crore, accounting for over 60% of the investments made by the industry
    • The funds raised in the category stand at Rs. 3.51 lakh crore showing an increase of 2% from Rs. 3.44 lakh crore in September 2024
    • Cat II AIFs have recorded a net investment of Rs. 1.75 lakh crore in equity or equity linked securities, Rs. 1.14 lakh crore in debt securities and Rs. 13,400 crore in REITs and InvITs

    Cat III AIFs

    • The commitments raised in the category have seen an almost 20% increase from Rs. 1.84 lakh crore as on September 2024 to Rs. 2.18 lakh crore as on December 2024
    • Cat III AIFs have seen investments in them reach Rs. 1.46 lakh crore as on December 2024, showing an 18% increase from Rs. 1.23 lakh crore in September 2024 
    • The category accounts for about 30% of the total investment in AIFs
    • Funds raised in Cat II AIFs has seen a 17% rise from Rs. 1.11 lakh crore in September 2024 to Rs. 1.30 lakh crore in December 2024
    • The funds in this category have recorded investment of Rs. 1.18 lakh crore in equity or equity linked securities, Rs. 3,400 crore in debt securities and Rs. 9,200 crore in REITs and InvITs

    Cumulative net investment in top 10 sectors

    Real estate remains the top sector with investment of Rs. 73,900 crore as on December 2024. However, the total investment in the sector has reduced marginally from Rs. 75,500 crore in September 2024. The IT and ITes (IT enabled services) sector has recorded the second most investments made of Rs. 30,300 crore, increasing by 9% from Rs. 27,800 crore in September 2024.

    The financial services sector is third with an investment of Rs. 26,800 crore, recording a 4% increase from Rs. 25,800 crore in September 2024. 

    Other sectors which have seen a notable increase in their investment in the September – December quarter includes banks which have seen a 17% increase in investment from Rs. 18,200 crore to Rs. 21,300 crore, renewable energy sector whose investment has increased by 9% from Rs. 11,700 crore to Rs. 12,700 crore, FMCG sector with an increase in investment of 7% from Rs. 10,700 crore to Rs. 11,400 crore and pharmaceuticals sectors which has recorded a 6% increase from Rs. 17,300 crore to Rs. 18,300 crore during this period.

    All other sectors have seen a 21% increase in investment from Rs. 2.30 lakh crore in September 2024 to Rs. 2.78 lakh crore in December 2024.
