    MFDs and NDs remain crucial for the MF industry, drive 47% of business

    They contribute Rs 21.06 lakh crore to the top 30 fund houses’ total average AUM of Rs 44.62 lakh crore.

    An analysis of AUM data published as on June 2023 shows that the top 30 fund houses (in terms of June 2023 quarterly average AUM) derive 47% of their total monthly average AUM from non-associate distributors like MFDs and NDs.

    Direct plans, however, are not far behind as they contribute 46%. The remaining 7% is from associate distributors i.e. affiliates of fund houses.

    Further analysis reveals that HDFC MF has the largest share of MFD and ND assets at Rs 2.60 lakh crore. ICICI Prudential MF follows HDFC MF closely with an average AUM of Rs 2.56 lakh crore.

    UTI MF, SBI MF, Kotak MF and Nippon India MF get the next highest business of over Rs 1.50 lakh crore each.

    Aditya Birla Sun Life MF and Axis MF follow next with a share of more than Rs 1 lakh crore from MFDs and NDs.

    Among other fund houses in the top 10 list in terms assets of MFDs and NDs are Edelweiss MF and Mirae Asset MF who individually manage Rs 84,325 crore and Rs 82,762 crore, respectively.

    In percentage terms, 15 fund houses derive 50% or more of their total monthly average AUM from MFDs and NDs. Of these Mahindra Manulife MF has the highest proportion of 90% followed by Franklin Templeton MF (80%) and Edelweiss MF (78%).
