World renowned bansuri’, player Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is a classicist who has made a conscious effort to reach out and expand the audience for classical music. Jayshree Pyasi finds out that Panditji is firmly devoted to his art and believes that Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Laxmi are in a constant state of strife

flute player Pandit Hariprasad ChaurasiaUnlike salaried individuals the artists and musicians do not have a regular fixed income or a fixed retirement age. Given the uncertain nature of your work, what are the special challenges in managing finances?

Being an artist earns us a lot of respect but one never has the privilege of making property or assimilating wealth. In my opinion ‘Goddess of Knowledge and Art - Saraswati’ and ‘Goddess of Wealth - Laxmi’ are in a constant state of strife.

    Who manages your financial affairs?

We artists lead a simple life. Whatever property I have generated over the years has been given to me by my well wishers. My ‘Brindaban Gurukul’ has been made by a charitable trust where I live with my students. I could not have afforded a residential complex this size and in such a prime location on an artist’s salary.

Who helps you make investments for the future?

My prime years where finances could have been a concern are long gone and at the age of 73 investing money for future is no longer a priority.  I wish to keep investing in my art for the remaining years of my life.

Have you ever invested? Any experience you can share with us?

I have invested only in the new generation of artists who wish to learn and carry the rich tradition forward. In my ‘gurukul’, I have fifteen students staying with me who have come from various locations in India. In addition, I have many day scholars who are learning the art of playing flute free of cost under my tutelage.

Is there any investment that you repent making?

The investments I have made in my life have given me love and respect beyond my imagination. I am happy when I see my ‘gurukul’. My needs are taken care of… when I need to go anywhere, there is transport available at my door. What else can I ask for?

Are you a financial savvy person?

(Smiles) Looking at my lifestyle anyone can make out that finances do not rank high on my priority list. In spite of that, I am a firm advocate of managing financial matters well. A person with a salaried income should manage finances well so that he can meet his aspirations.

Do you give any lessons to your children about savings and investment?

I have taught my son to be self sufficient and independent in terms of finances. This has led to my son standing on his own feet. Now, the situation is that neither I take anything from him nor he takes anything from me except for love and care.

Have you ever read or do you read financial newspapers?

Very rarely. I might have gone through Economic Times sometimes.

If a budding artist who has just got a big break were to seek your guidance on managing his/ her finances, what would be your advice?

Every artist should understand that wealth should be present with them in right proportions. Too much wealth can hamper your art and less wealth can force you away from the beloved art.
