Insurance agents and brokers of national capital region (NCR), which includes New Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon will have to ask their clients to furnish pollution under control (PUC) certificate of the vehicle at the time of renewal of motor insurance.
Following the Supreme Court order, IRDAI has asked insurance companies not to renew motor insurance policies without PUC certificate. Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed insurance companies not to renew motor insurance policies without PUC certificate. The apex court said, “Insurance companies will not renew insurance of a vehicle unless the owner provides pollution under control (PUC) certificate.”
While the norms have been around for quite some time, IRDAI has found that insurance companies and intermediaries are renewing policies without insisting their clients to furnish PUC in NCR.
Third party motor insurance is mandatory in India. However, General Insurance Council data shows that only 40% of vehicles plying in Indian roads have motor insurance.
