IRDAI has nudged insurance companies to offer health insurance policies to transgenders, differently abled persons, people who are HIV positive or infected with AIDS and people suffering from mental illness.
While there has been a provision to issue to policies to these individuals, insurance companies are reluctant to offer to people with special needs owing to high risk capital.
In this context, IRDAI has asked insurance companies – life, non-life and health insurers to disclose their underwriting practices with respect to treatment with health policies to transgenders, differently abled persons, HIV positive people and people infected with AIDS and people suffering from mental illness.
IRDAI said, “All the insurers now are further instructed to publish on their respective websites the aspects of underwriting philosophy and approach with regard to offering health insurance coverage to transgender persons, persons with disability (PWD), people affected with HIV/AIDS and mental illness diseases so that the targeted population may have complete information on the philosophy that insurers adopt in this regard.”
