A day in the life of an MFD - Vinod Jain

Vinod Jain of Jain Investment takes us through his everyday routine.
    Karishma Gagwani Mar 19, 2022

On a recent afternoon, Cafemutual spoke with Vinod Jain of Jain Investment to get a glimpse of his daily routine. What stood out in this casual conversation was the importance of starting the day right and following a disciplined approach. We can thus conveniently say that ‘a right start’ and ‘discipline’ are the two keys to maximising efficiency and productivity.

Here is what Vinod shared with us.

5:30 am - Reading helps to create the right frame of mind and so I start my day by reading for around half an hour. I like reading across various genres like psychology, food, autobiographies etc. These days, I am hooked on ‘Influence’ and ‘More than you know’.

6:00 am - I continue my wellness routine with four to five glasses of warm water followed by a plate of fruits. After that, I get into my workout clothes and leave for a nearby club.

7:00 am - My workout routine comprises a mix of badminton, exercising and swimming. Being a serious badminton player, I follow my hourly workout regime diligently. Post-workout I indulge in a healthy and fun chat with my club friends over a hot cup of tea or coffee.

8:45 am - Once home, I freshen up and get ready for breakfast. My breakfast complements my workout routine with variety of south Indian options. I enjoy having breakfast with latest news through TV or newspapers.

9:30 am - My driver drops me at office, which is a couple of blocks away from home. I start my workday by checking emails and making a to-do list. I also set aside time for interacting with my team and industry friends without any specific agenda. I believe, such informal conversations create positive and good work relationships.

1:00 pm - I enjoy home-cooked roti and sabzi along with light-hearted conversations with my colleagues. As my everyday routine, I end my lunch with chaas (buttermilk).

2:00 pm - During the second half, I take up scheduled portfolio reviews. Next, I read annual reports, quarterly results and earnings call.

5:30 pm - When I don’t have any meetings, this is when I usually wind up my work. Before leaving office, I make it a point to check on how the day has come along for my colleagues.

6:00 pm - I reach home and rest for a while before having an early Marwari dinner at 6:30 pm. Post-dinner I help my younger daughter with her school assignments. Thereafter, I usually connect with my friends, step out with my wife to pick home essentials or take my family for a quick drive.

Before calling it a day, I watch a series/movie. If my daughter is around, we usually watch her favourite comic series - Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. Otherwise, I watch Qarib Qarib Single (Fun fact - Qarib Qarib is my favourite movie which I have watched over 100 times).

    10:30 pm - Lights off!

    The Weekend Mantra

My morning routine remains more or less the same over weekends, apart from the fact that I get to spend more time with my club friends.

Saturdays, we have our weekly training sessions where I line up some interesting topics for my team on an online platform. Then I have lunch and plan my remaining day with family. Sundays aren’t pre-decided. Apart from spending time with family, I may write down an article, read or do anything less that interests me.
