Forbes India Rich List 2019: Ambani retains top spot; Adani gains big

The 100 richest Indians list published by Forbes includes six new faces this year.
    Team Cafemutual Oct 17, 2019

Mukesh Ambani continues to be the richest Indian for the 12th year in a row, shows a report by Forbes. His net worth increased by nearly $4.1 billion to $51.4 billion (nearly Rs.3.60 lakh crore).

Among the other big gainers was infrastructure tycoon Gautam Adani, who jumped eight spots to become the second richest Indian. His net worth stands at $15.7 billion (around Rs 1.10 lakh crore). A resident of Gujarat, Adani venturing into a slew of new businesses from airports to data centres has benefitted him, the report said.

Banking giant Uday Kotak also gained big. His net worth rose by $4.0 billion (nearly Rs 28,000 crore) to $ 14.8 billion and propelled him into the top five for the first time.

There are six new faces in the 100 richest Indians this year. One of them is Byju Raveendran, the 38-year-old founder of fast-rising edtech unicorn Byju’s. Manohar Lal and Madhusudan Agarwal of Haldiram Snacks and Rajesh Mehra who owns the popular Jaquar brand of bathroom fittings are also among these six new faces.

These individuals did well to generate wealth and buck the trend in a year that was otherwise quite a challenging one for wealth creators. Of the 100 richest Indians, the net worth of more than half the list members have witnessed a decline. In all, 14 were poorer by $1 billion or more, and nine members from last year’s ranks dropped off the list.

The total wealth of this year’s 100 richest shrank 8% from a year ago to $452 billion. It is pertinent to note that more than a third of that decline was due to the generosity of tech tycoon Azim Premji, who gave away a chunk of his fortune in March and consequently dropped in the ranks to the 17th spot from the second spot.

Here is a table containing details of the Forbes 100 richest Indians
