    Assets of MF industry crosses Rs.17 lakh crore in 2016

    AMFI’s yearly data shows that AUM of MF industry reached all time high at Rs.17.06 lakh crore in December 2016.

    Year 2016 ended on a positive note for the mutual fund industry. The assets managed by the Indian mutual industry have grown from Rs.13.50 lakh crore in December 2015 to Rs.17.06 lakh crore in December 2016, shows a note sent to fund houses by AMFI. This translates to a growth of 26% in assets.

    “The industry monthly AAUM crossed the landmark of Rs.17 lakh crore in the month of December 2016 and recorded highest ever monthly AAUM of Rs.17,06,097 crore for the month of December 2016 and highest ever quarterly AAUM of ₹16,93,339 crore for the quarter ended December 2016,” said AMFI.

    The growth has come largely on account of SIPs. AMFI data shows that the industry had over 1 crore SIPs in regular plans and 8.50 lakh SIPs in direct plans in August. The AUM of SIPs collected under regular plan is Rs.1.20 lakh crore whereas the AUM of SIPs collected through direct plans stood at Rs. 8,000 crore. In terms of monthly inflows, the total amount collected through SIPs has increased to Rs. 3,500 crore (Rs.333 crore under direct plans and Rs. 3,164 under regular plan) as on August 2016.

    Another key trend that AMFI has highlighted in its note was about growth in retail AUM. The assets held by retail investors in mutual fund has increased to Rs.5.34 lakh crore as on December 2016, a growth of 19% in a year. Retail AUM constitutes about 32.5% of the overall Industry AUM. Mutual funds witnessed a net inflow of Rs.14,000 crore in December 2016 as compared to Rs.8,155 crore in December 2015.

    Overall, there was a net inflow of Rs.10,923 crore in the month of December 2016, taking into account all categories of schemes as compared to net inflow of ₹ 36,021 crore during November 2016 and net outflow of ₹ 22,567 crore during December 2015.

    The Industry has recorded net inflow of Rs.10,103 crore under Equity schemes (including ELSS) in the month of December 2016, the highest inflow in last 18 months, said AMFI.
