AMFI data shows that individual investors – retail and HNIs account for 54% of the total assets of the MF industry.
Of the total Rs.32.71 lakh crore of the MF industry, Individual investors have assets of Rs.17.27 lakh crore as on March 2021.

Investor categories across various schemes
Individual investors have contributed 88% of the total equity AUM. Surprisingly, individual investors have increased their exposure to debt funds with contribution of 40% in the total debt AUM of the MF industry.
Overall, debt-oriented schemes, ETFs & FOFs and liquid/money market derived their assets majorly from institutional investors.

Of every Rs.100 in mutual funds, individual investors have invested Rs.70 in equity funds, Rs.23 in debt funds and Rs.5 in liquid funds. Whereas, institutional investors majorly invested in debt-oriented schemes and liquid/money market.
