The All-Mutual Fund Distributors Welfare Association (AMDwA) organised a meeting with AMC officials called Samvaad 2.0 in which the association members requested AMCs to approach SEBI to revisit the circular on MFD nomenclature.

Ajay Sharma, President, AMDwA said that the key objective of the meeting is to seek permission to use the term ‘mutual fund advisor’ instead of ‘distributor’. The word mutual fund advisor reflects the role of distributors better, he said.

Sharma said, “There was a resolution, with many MF officials agreeing to help us bring this request up to AMFI and SEBI.”

Apart from members of the association, 55 MF officials across 28 fund houses attended this meet. The meet focussed on fostering dialogue between mutual fund distributors (MFDs) and asset management companies (AMCs).

The meet also featured a few panel discussions on key changes like regulatory impacts and challenges posed by FinTech and social media influencers. The meeting also discussed allowing MFDs to do investor awareness programs with AMCs.

The association also announced its upcoming knowledge event in February themed ‘Udghosh (Proclamation)

This will be move.Investors perceive mutual fund distributor as delivery boy, newspaper hawker or parchun Dukan wala who sell various products without adding any value.QUESTION to be asked whether mfds are Zomato delivery boy for investors. When I see qualifications of MFD , we found many many MFD are CA, MBA, CFP,ENGINEERS,BANKERS,CFA EVEN DOCTORS and so on.TO bring dignity to MFD , MUTUAL FUND ADVISOR WOULD BE APT TERM.

It is really a good and long awaited move.
On one side, it is expected that he/she should call himself as Distributor and not Advisor. On the other side, by way of Due Diligence, he is expected to fulfil so many requirements about record keeping, avoid misselling, ensure risk profiling of each investor and offering the schemes which should be most appropriate and safe for the investor.
Is a distributor of anything (say grocery, cosmetics or any commodity) is compelled by such Due Diligence norms?
Once you call him as a distributor, he is allowed just to Distribute the things (of whichever brand or quality or Higiene) he wishes or gives him more profit.

MFD with certain qualifications like CFP, CWM, CFA, CA and / or MBA should be allowed to use the term 'advisor' to be distinctly stand out from the crowd

    Yes, this is much required.
    Rakesh Popat · 1 day ago `
Yes if mfd completes certain certification requirements he should definitely be allowed to use advisor with his name

Thus mutual fund advisor (MFA) is more appropriate designation then a distributor.
