An analysis of the MF industry AUM data by Cafemutual shows that HDFC MF, ICICI Prudential MF and SBI MF are the top three fund houses in terms of individual MF AUM in December 2024.
Individual AUM includes contributions from both retail investors and HNIs.
Our analysis shows that among all fund houses, HDFC MF commands the highest contribution from individual investors. The fund house manages Rs.5.60 lakh crore of individual assets, which is 70% of its total AUM.
ICICI Prudential MF occupies the second spot with AUM of Rs. 5.45 lakh crore coming from individual investors, about 62% of its total assets.
Not far behind is SBI MF with an individual AUM of Rs. 5.38 lakh crore. The India’s largest fund house in terms of AUM derives 48% of the total AUM from individual investors.
Nippon India MF and Kotak MF occupy the fourth and fifth spots with individual AUM of Rs. 3.47 lakh crore and Rs. 2.90 lakh crore, respectively. While Nippon India MF receives 60% of its total AUM from individual investors, Kotak MF derives 58% of the total assets from such investors.
Other fund houses in the top 10 list in terms of individual AUM include Axis MF, Aditya Birla Sun Life MF, UTI MF, Mirae Asset MF and DSP MF.
In terms of proportion of individual assets with respect to the total assets, Taurus MF has the highest share of its assets coming from individual investors at 96%. Quant MF and Samco MF also derive over 90% of their assets from individual investors.
PPFAS MF and Franklin Templeton MF complete the top five with individual investors constituting 91% and 90% of their AUM, respectively.
Other fund houses with a high proportion of the total assets coming from individual investors are PPFAS MF, Frranklin Templeton MF, PGIM India MF, Canara Robeco MF, Mahindra Manulife MF, WhiteOak Capital MF and Helios MF.
Overall, the individual investors contribute Rs. 42.49 lakh crore to the industry, forming 61% of the total MF assets.

Retail AUM
HDFC MF is the leader in the segment with retail AUM of Rs. 2.24 lakh crore. SBI MF is second in this space with retail assets of Rs. 2.06 lakh crore. ICICI Prudential MF is third with retail assets amounting to Rs. 1.81 lakh crore.
Overall, the retail investors contribute Rs. 18.93 lakh crore to the MF industry, which is 28% of the total industry’s assets.

HNI AUM
In terms of HNI assets, ICICI Prudential MF tops the list with HNI assets of Rs. 3.64 lakh crore.
HDFC MF is the second with assets of Rs. 3.35 lakh crore coming from HNIs. SBI MF occupies the third spot with HNI assets of Rs. 3.32 lakh crore.
Overall, the HNI assets account for 34% of the total MF industry AUM or Rs.27.60 lakh crore.
