    Where do individual investors invest their money in mutual funds?

    A study done by Cafemutual gives insights into the actual preferences of individual investors.

    Individual investors - retail investors and HNIs have invested majority of their assets in pure equity funds. Of the total AUM of Rs.42.58 lakh crore of individual investors, 79% has been invested in pure equity funds including ELSS.

    The next two biggest categories where retail investors have substantial assets are pure debt funds and hybrid funds.

    These three categories account for 95% of the total individual assets or Rs.40.57 lakh crore in December 2024.

    In terms of proportion of assets to the total assets, hybrid funds, pure equity funds and international FoFs derive the highest proportion from individual investors in December 2024, shows an analysis of AUM data done by Cafemutual.

    Our analysis shows that hybrid funds derive 92% of their assets from individual investors. The category manages a total AUM of Rs.3.77 lakh crore. Of this, Rs.3.48 lakh crore AUM has come from individual investors.

    Next in the list is pure equity funds, which sees 88% of its total assets or Rs.33.50 lakh crore coming from individual investors. Within pure equity funds, retail investors account for a significant part of assets. The data reveals that retail AUM in pure equity funds is Rs.17.28 lakh crore or 52% of the total individual equity assets.

    The third largest fund category in terms of proportion of the total assets coming from individual investors is fund of funds investing overseas. Here 81% of the total AUM or Rs.21,943 crore comes from individual investors.

    Debt funds other than liquid funds have recorded individual contributions of 35% of the total assets. Both retail and HNIs have invested Rs.3.59 lakh crore in debt funds with HNIs contributing 88% of it. Retail investors have invested a very small proportion of their assets in debt funds.

    Gold ETFs also see 27% of their total assets coming from individual investors.

    Other ETFs which include both equity and debt ETFs record just 8% of their total assets coming from individual investors.

    Overall, the MF industry has recorded 61% of its total assets coming from individual investors. Of the total AUM of Rs.69.33 lakh crore, individual investors account for Rs.42.58 lakh crore. 

    Within individual AUM, while retail investors contribute Rs.18.96 lakh crore or 44% of the total individual AUM, HNIs command 56% of the total individual assets or Rs.23.62 lakh crore in December 2024.
