I have been reading the letters written by Warren Buffet to his shareholders for the last 15 years. In his letters, he shares his wisdom on investing and case studies on his company Berkshire Hathaway’s success. Max Olson has consolidated those letters in an unedited version of the book called ‘Berkshire Hathaway Letters to Shareholders’. I can say that whatever I have learnt about investing over the last so many years, has been through these letters.

The second book which I would like to recommend to my peers is ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow.’ It is written by Nobel Prize winner in Economics Daniel Kahneman. The author talks about the two systems in which our brain performs. One is the fast, automatic and frequent and the second system is slow, effortful and infrequent. The book answers how each mood affects our decision making which in turn impacts our lives. This book has taught me that we should not take decisions solely based on our intuitions.

Sometime in the early days of my career as a financial planner, I read a book ‘Who Moved my Cheese: An Amazing Way to Deal with change in Your Work and in Your Life’ authored by Dr. Spencer Johnson. The book still remains fresh in my mind. It is all about embracing change in your personal and professional life. Some of the lessons which I have learnt from this book are:

    • You should adapt to changes; don’t be afraid otherwise you will be left behind.
    • You should notice the small changes happening in your career and act accordingly.
    • Don’t try to over analyze and complicate things. Keep it simple and adhere to it.
    • Moving in a new direction can bring better results even in a hopeless situation.
