In a clarification issued today, IRDAI has asked general insurance companies not to reject claim request of policyholders for not having a valid PUC certificate at the time of claim request.
A PUC or pollution under control certificate is an approval that emission from your vehicle is under control and as per the pollution norms. It is an official document issued by the government after a thorough verification of the vehicle’s emission levels.
Currently, it is mandatory for all vehicles on Indian roads to carry a valid PUC certification.
The insurance regulator said, “It is hereby clarified that not holding a valid PUC certificate is not a valid reason for denying any claim under a motor insurance policy.”
The regulator came out with this clarification after there were some misleading media reports that claimed that insurance companies could reject claims if a policyholder does not have valid PUC.
However, IRDAI has clarified that policyholders are required to have a valid PUC at the time of renewing their policy.
