The government has appointed Finance Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term, effective March 1, 2025.
Pandey is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1987 Odisha cadre. Prior to this, he has served as Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Revenue. The appointment of the SEBI Chairman is approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Pandey succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, the first woman to lead SEBI, whose tenure concludes on February 28, 2025.
Pandey has had a distinguished career, holding various significant positions in both the Union Government and the State Government of Odisha.
His educational background includes a Master's in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK). He has expertise in finance, commerce, and industrial development.
